Imagine if every product carried a label with information on how much energy or water was consumed in its production, or what impact its manufacturing had on the greenhouse effect. Utopia? At Wiesner-Hager, it's been a reality for a long time!
In the Wiesner-Hager, as early as the mid-1980s - long before discussions about climate change gained momentum - they realized that the principle of sustainable development would not one day represent a luxury, but a necessity. Because Wiesner-Hager sees itself not just as an economic enterprise, but as part of a global ecosystem, it defined and adopted environmental policy principles based on this understanding. In short, these principles commit its management and all employees to an awareness of personal responsibility for the environment.
How does this manifest in practice? Simply - every step of production, from design to waste management, is thoroughly analyzed with regard to energy consumption and ecological impact. This operational ecological balance of the company takes into account the impact on the greenhouse effect, the potential for stratospheric ozone depletion, summer smog formation, soil and water acidification and eutrophication, and the depletion of abiotic resources. An important criterion of the balance is also the difference between the sums of energy inputs and outputs, which should be as small as possible.
A similar balance can then be calculated by Wiesner-Hager for each individual product. Every office chair, table, or piece of furniture has its own ecological product declaration label that tracks its entire life cycle, from raw material acquisition to disposal. Thus, the customer gains complete information about the environmental impact of the product they are purchasing.
The audit of the ecological declaration creation process is conducted annually by TÜV Austria and is confirmed by a certificate according to ISO 14025.
