The general reconstruction of the České Budějovice train station has reached its goal. Visitors can now use the renovated departure and arrival hall, a new shopping arcade connected to Lannova Street, and a rest area for waiting passengers. The station reconstruction took place from 2019, with the arrival hall opening last spring. The ceremonial opening of the departure hall took place on February 5, 2024.
The station building dates back to 1908. The construction work was initiated by the Railway Administration in 2020. The new design of the public spaces in the heritage-protected building was created by the A8000 studio in intensive cooperation with heritage specialists, respecting the original form while emphasizing functionality and the needs of the 21st century. The arrival hall opened last spring, and now the check-in hall is starting operations. The fundamental architectural principle is purity and a return to the original simple color scheme. The interior spaces are cleansed of visual smog and unsuitable fittings, historical wall mosaics by artists Boukal and Březina are preserved and professionally restored, and the end elements are harmonized into a uniform performance, while the building received a new information system and a waiting area.
"The station dates back to 1908. Transportation 100 years ago was, of course, different than today. Our goal was to sensitively transfer the heritage-protected building into the 21st century in a way that fully meets the needs of current passengers," explains architect Martin Krupauer from the A8000 studio.
The use of the renovated building is multifunctional. In addition to space for waiting passengers, you will also find shops and services here. There are also new offices. The building has received a new orientation and information system. The check-in hall provides traditional ticket counters, ticket machines, the EZOP information system, and new boards displaying train departures. Vending machines for beverages and food, luggage storage boxes, and parcel pickup boxes are standard. Services from three carriers—České dráhy, GW Train, and Arriva—are available at the České Budějovice station.
Part of the reconstruction also includes the construction of a new arcade linking the new entrance to the building from the north with the main check-in hall. This creates a direct connection to Lannova Street, the main link between the station and the city center of České Budějovice. Passengers will find new shops, cafes, and other services in the arcade.
The area in front of the station has also been transformed. It is now safer and cleaner. The waiting area is complemented by trees planted in regular spacing and a drinking water vending machine. The outdoor and indoor furniture from the company mmcité is unified in the same materials and colors. The neat interior symbolically flows into the public space and vice versa. "I consider the station in České Budějovice to be one of the most beautiful on the Czech railway. I am very pleased that it has undergone a transformation that it undoubtedly deserves. The station is now connected to Lannova Street, becoming a true part of the city center and shedding many barriers," adds Jiří Svoboda, General Director of the Railway Administration. The reconstruction contractor is a consortium of companies Metrostav, Edikt, and Avers.
The train station building in České Budějovice was built in 1908 in a historicizing neo-Renaissancestyle. The architectural design of this monumental building was created by architect Gustav Kulhavý. The history of railway transport in České Budějovice, however, began to be written in 1828, when the horse-drawn railway to Linz was opened. The new station for locomotives opened in 1868, but was later replaced by the existing building, which is now declared a cultural monument.
