Prague – The transportation construction of the year 2024 has become, for example, the footbridge over the Elbe in Nymburk, the second stage of the cycle path between the Bečva and Vlára rivers, and the reconstruction of the railway station building in České Budějovice. Six projects received the title. In addition, 22 more projects were awarded special recognition. For instance, the Štvanická footbridge and the reconstruction of the Negrelli viaduct received awards. The organizers presented the awards today at the National Technical Museum.

The competition was announced and organized by the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction. A total of 88 constructions were nominated. Among them were six foreign projects in which Czech firms participated in the design or construction, and 82 constructions of transportation and technical infrastructure from all regions of the Czech Republic. The projects were divided into three sections in the competition. A total of 22 were nominated for railways and trams, 17 for water constructions, and 49 for road constructions.

Besides the mentioned projects, the city circuit in Pilsen, specifically its section Křimická (Chebská) - Karlovarská, the adjustment of the head of the Hořín Lock, and the optimization of the railway section Lysá nad Labem – Čelákovice were also awarded the title of transportation construction of the year.

For example, the footbridge over the Elbe received an award for connecting both sides of the river in a modern way that respects the historical character of the city. The footbridge features a unique structure that is not only a functional transportation solution but also an aesthetic element.

The reconstructed railway station in České Budějovice has created facilities for passengers that, according to the competition organizers, are dignified spaces corresponding to current standards, with historical elements being preserved sensitively.

At the beginning of November, the foundation announced the winners of the Construction of the Year 2024. This includes, for example, the Masaryčka administrative building, the Imperial Baths, and the Concert Hall in Karlovy Vary, as well as a multifunctional football stadium in Hradec Králové. The title of Foreign Construction of the Year was awarded to the Bergtunnlar Skärholmen road bypass near Stockholm. This year, 15 projects received the title of Construction of the Year, and 26 special awards were given. In the summer, the foundation awarded the Urban Planning Project of the Year 2024 to the area study for the transformation of Bohumínská and Frýdecká streets in Ostrava.

The Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction, also known as the ABF Foundation, was established in 1990 at the initiative of the International Union of Construction Centers, which has associated status with the UN as a recommended form of development for the Czech Center for Construction Information. The foundation aims to promote the development of architecture, construction, and urban planning, as well as the aesthetic, technical, economic, health, and social quality of construction. Since 1992, it has organized the Construction of the Year competition.
