This unique switch was created specifically for the concept store MONOBRAND, boldly combining the shapes and components of two seemingly incompatible design lines of Berker switches. The round frame is borrowed from the Berker R. classic line, which proudly aligns itself with Bauhaus style due to its appearance and respect for minimalist classic forms. Berker R. Classic switches originally come with a rotary knob, but the Berker R. Classic MONO has broken free from this mold and surprisingly features a round central toggle in addition to a rocker switch, which it borrowed from the design lines Berker R.1/R.3 – switches that highlight the new millennium with their date of origin and rebellious appearance of a round toggle in the center of a square frame. Berker R.Classic MONO is a surprisingly interesting fusion of over a century-old Bauhaus style with a fresh breeze of third millennium design.
You can typically have the Berker R. Classic MONO switches in glossy white or black, but thanks to the custom manufacturing program Manufaktura, the manufacturer of these switches, the German-French company Hager, allows you to choose any RAL color, finish, or even decide on a switch made from entirely original materials. The concept store MONOBRAND even has white or black switches with a matte finish in stock. "We supplied the switches and sockets from our Berker R.Classic MONO line in a special custom finish, for example, for the Julius hotel residence in Prague," recalls Katrin Grund, the owner and founder of the design store for interior accessories, MONOBRAND. "The interiors of the Julius residence were designed by the team down to the last detail. One of the tasks the team set for themselves was to transfer the atmosphere of Alfons Mucha's paintings into the interior. For this reason, a standard color from which Berker switches are made was not selected. To complete the overall tuning of the interior, the switches needed to be created with a bronze feeling. We therefore had to devise and mix a special shade, and went through several rounds of proposals and adjustments for the color accent and chose from a whole range of samples until we finally achieved the desired look," explains Katrin Grund about the process of developing custom switches. In the final look, you will find not only switches and power sockets but also all other electrical installation elements of modern electrical installations, including, for example, blinds switches or USB sockets for convenient charging of mobile phones in the interior of The Julius.
The Berker R. Classic MONO switches have also been favored by interior designer Ivanka Kowalski for her own apartment in Karlín. In her black-and-white themed apartment, she paid attention to every detail. "I carefully selected small elements that ultimately significantly contribute to the overall atmosphere of the interior. I chose Berker R. Classic MONO for my apartment – these switches are based on the popular round rotary Berker switches that I have already used several times in my projects, but this time they have a custom soft velvet black matte finish. I like the round rotary switches from the Berker series 1930 and Berker R.Classic, and I enjoy working with both their bakelite and porcelain versions depending on the context. Nevertheless, neither of these classic versions quite fit into that interior. In the end, I decided to soften the plastic material with a special finish, and given the industrial feel of the apartment, I replaced the rotary variant with the rocker," explains Ivanka Kowalski.
The Berker R.Classic MONO switches are not only compatible with modern contemporary interiors, but they can also complement seemingly entirely different types of interiors. A good example is the use of the glossy white variant of these home switches in the cozy wooden interior of the newly renovated cottage Dvě sestry in the Krkonošsko region. The interior designer, Denisa Strmisková, sensitively combined the original atmosphere of the log cabin with contemporary trends influenced by Scandinavian living styles. "The Berker R. Classic MONO switches naturally fit into this mosaic. Their range of use is really broad – they can highlight the appearance of a small cabin but also serve well in large commercial projects," reflects Katrin Grund.
"I enjoy experimenting with new approaches and combinations in interiors; I love discovering brands that are still unknown in the Czech market but belong to the absolute top in terms of quality and design, as well as small family manufacturers and other hidden treasures," smiles Katrin Grund. "The Berker R. Classic MONO switches were in fact custom developed for our MONOBRAND store, and they have proven very successful in several projects, while you can be sure that you won't find a similar switch in every second development project. They are design gems that have already found their place in the right implementations, and I believe they will continue to do so in the future," concludes Katrin Grund.
