Tchoban Foundation architectural museum in Berlin

The new building, designed by the architectural firm SPEECH in Moscow, architects Sergei Tchoban and Sergei Kuznetsov, is located at the beginning of the former brewery complex. This area was closed in 1848 for the Pfefferberg brewery and has been a cultural monument since 1990 along with the surrounding buildings.

The building was designed as a basement monolithic structure with a rectangular floor plan.
The individual floors are stacked on top of one another, creating the impression of concrete cubes layered on each other. The four lower cubes feature a yellow sand pigmentation that resembles parchment paper. On the top cube, a glass section is placed, evoking a box. This part extends over the edge of the concrete structure on the northeastern side of the facade, with its lower part clad in noble steel. As this is a museum of architectural drawings, the design of the monolithic facade utilized original sketches. Each floor of the building has its own motif, which is repeated several times in varying widths. All these motifs belong to the first sketches that Tchoban drew in 2001. To transfer these motifs to the facade, technology from RECKLI, one of the world's leaders in structural matrices and molds in the field of exposed concrete, was used. The designs of the motifs were first scanned and converted into a DWG file. Using a special CNC mill, the chosen design was milled into a model, which served as a positive for casting the RECKLI polyurethane elastic matrix.

The use of elastic matrices ensures exactly the same texture repetition for all produced concrete elements. Due to their elasticity, the concrete piece is also not damaged during demolding. The repeatability of the matrix guarantees the creation of a unique piece at lower costs. In addition to sketch designs, a grooved texture was also used, which is meant to represent a stack of sketches from the side.
