Two young people in the Swedish town of Särö decided on a radical change of a house that was completely inadequate in its layout and stylistically long out of fashion. They embarked on the reconstruction in Bauhaus style, one of the most significant avant-garde schools of art, design, and architecture. To allow maximum daylight into the house and enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape without compromising the energy efficiency of the building, they implemented a glazed facade using the thermal insulation system Schüco FW 50+.HI and sliding aluminum systems Schüco ASS 50.
The renovation project of the three-story villa located on a hill was carried out in the Swedish town of Särö, about 25 km south of Gothenburg. When the young owners purchased the house, it was largely in its original condition from 1969. They decided to undertake a gradual renovation and expansion in three phases, retaining only the basic concrete structures. They started with the less constructively and technically demanding parts of the building. First, they tackled the ground floor (65 m²) with the entrance zone, garage, laundry room, and storage spaces, followed by the upper floor (35 m²). However, the biggest challenge was the reconstruction of the middle floor covering an area of 170 m². This part of the house had to integrate all main living and functional spaces for daily life – a generously open living, dining, and kitchen area, as well as access to the terrace. Additionally, this part of the house had to feature a modern look in the spirit of Bauhaus style.
Concrete, Glass, Aluminum Systems
In addition to the formal simplicity, cubist shapes of building structures with flat roofs, and minimalist use of building materials (concrete), the Bauhaus style is associated with large glazed areas of the facade. The owners of the house in Särö wanted to systematically embody these design principles into the expanded and partially newly built middle floor of the villa. The panoramic view of the surrounding landscape from all parts of the space was to be as generous as possible. The owners also wished to select glazed sliding systems that could be used flexibly depending on the season and weather. Therefore, the technological and visual parameters of the systems were an important prerequisite.
Profiles recessed into the floor created a clean solution
The requirement to maximize the amount of light passing through large-format windows from floor to ceiling and sliding systems, without needing to change the existing flat roof structure, posed a particular challenge for the profile processor Alufront from Sävedalen. The experienced partner of Schüco designed a specific solution that allowed the lower window profiles to be recessed into the floor so deeply that only clean glass panels without frames remained visible.
The combination of the Schüco FW 50+.HI facade post-and-beam system with superior thermal insulation and the Schüco ASS 50 sliding and lift-sliding system proved to be a functional and visually aesthetic solution, resulting in a consistent appearance of the facade and large-format windows with narrow sight lines of frames in the interior. Special aluminum constructions with narrow sight lines of profiles allow for bearing increased loads in the form of large glazed areas – in this case with safety glass. This achieved maximum light passage with minimal frame sight lines and minimized space consumption for the installation of building elements.
The clients are thrilled with the results of the reconstruction – especially regarding the light, space, simplicity, and modernity of the living areas.
