The VELUX company, in collaboration with the world-renowned English designer Ross Lovegrove, has launched a new designer skylight that has won the prestigious red dot design award and now also the Green Good Design 2010. Ross Lovegrove designed an attractive solution for the interior part of the standard VELUX skylight, which he has transformed into a fascinating "daylight lamp".
Ross Lovegrove, famous for his innovative approaches, welcomed the opportunity to design a visually appealing solution for the VELUX skylight. The designer skylight consists of a frosted acrylic diffuser, a decorative ceiling ring made of highly reflective plastic, and a reflective drop, whose surface is also highly reflective. The reflective drop is not only an aesthetically interesting addition to the skylight but also regulates the amount of daylight entering the interior by changing the distance of the drop from the diffuser, which bathes the space in interesting light reflections. At night, the skylight can also be used as a source of artificial lighting thanks to the installed LED lighting carrier in the skylight's tube.
The skylight designed by Ross Lovegrove represents an elegant addition to the interior with entirely new properties and appearance. It draws attention to the interesting use of daylight, which becomes an integral part of the interior, adding an aesthetic dimension to functionality. In his design, the author was inspired by the idea of "capturing" natural daylight and bringing its purity and positive qualities into the interior. This has resulted in a very aesthetically interesting project of a "daylight lamp" that uses the sun instead of a light bulb.
“In my opinion, this is a very clean design accessible to a wide spectrum of society. The skylight is an amazing product in itself with unlimited durability, and my design simply aims to elegantly support its properties,” said Ross Lovegrove.
VELUX skylights even provide as much light as a traditional 60W light bulb during winter, when it’s overcast. On a cloudy winter day, they bring in 440 lumens of light, while on a summer day, 2800 lumens. For comparison – a traditional 60W electric light bulb provides light output of 430 lumens. Skylights that utilize natural daylight as a lighting source thus become a sustainable alternative to electric lighting. They can be installed in sloped and flat roofs. The new design element of the VELUX skylight can also be easily installed on existing VELUX skylights.
The VELUX company has long been engaged in the concept of healthy, environmentally friendly, and comfortable living for the 21st century. For this reason, it focuses on careful product development designed to maximize user comfort while also considering energy savings. The designer skylight is a clear example of this. VELUX verifies its products in practice, including within experimental active homes as part of the VELUX Model Home 2020 project. All buildings included in this project share not only energy efficiency and adequate fresh air but also sufficient daylight that penetrates all spaces.
