The aim of the 7th edition of the conference is to open a discussion on the impact of the railway on the urbanism of cities versus the return of spaces back to cities and the search for new functions. The theme of the conference corresponds with the 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first train to Prague and the celebration of railways across the Czech Republic.
Date: June 3, 2015, 8.30 AM - 4.00 PM
Location: Cultural Hall of Czech Railways, Main Train Station in Prague
In August 1845, 20 years after the emergence of the first steam railway in the world, the first train broke through the walls and entered Prague. By the end of the 19th century, railways changed the world – they interconnected continents from sea to sea, influencing cities, industry, and people's lives. One hundred seventy years later, the demands placed on rail transport by society are different. Speed and travel comfort are increasing, while the requirements for the spatial extent of transport facilities are decreasing. Stations and entire lines are being abandoned, others are being reconstructed, and what were once vast railway spaces are being returned to the city. How to manage them? How to deal with their memory dimension? And does the railway still have the potential to influence life as it did at its inception? These are some of the questions this year's Crossroads of Architecture will attempt to address.
