What are the possible approaches to the Vřídelní Colonnade building and its surroundings? The Office of Architecture of the City of Karlovy Vary invites experts to a discussion
What is the position of the architecture of the 1960s and 1970s in the context of the perception of contemporary society? And what is the position of the Vřídelní Colonnade on the list of Brussels-style architecture? The Office of Architecture of the City of Karlovy Vary (KAM KV) has invited experts in the field of architecture to discuss the values of 1960s - 70s architecture and specifically the Vřídelní Colonnade. The discussion will take place on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at 6 PM on the 2nd floor of the Vřídelní Colonnade, admission is free.
The current form of the Vřídelní Colonnade emerged from an architectural competition in the early 1960s and visibly reflects the so-called Brussels style and the views on urban creation of the 60s. Although the Vřídelní Colonnade building has been rated ambivalently by the public, it undoubtedly hides great architectural qualities. “We have invited Petr Hájek, a prominent architect originally from Karlovy Vary, architecture critic Radomíra Sedláková, architectural historian Lukáš Beran, and Václav Benedikt, a city councilor and supporter of the cast-iron replica of the Vřídelní Colonnade by architects Fellner and Helmer to the panel discussion. The goal of this discussion is to present the general public with possible solutions for the future appearance of the Vřídlo area as equivalent alternatives and to discuss their positives and negatives.” stated Karel Adamec, director of KAM KV.
The discussion will take place as part of the series of events VŘÍDLO°, which KAM KV organizes for the public throughout September. It was launched by a lecture by Roman Vrtiška on the approach to 1960s - 70s architecture, followed by an exhibition showcasing the revitalization study of the Vřídelní Colonnade. You can find the complete program of this series and recordings of events on the website www.kamkv.cz/vridlo.
