From Buildings to Cities

Matthias Schuler (46) studied environmental engineering at TU Stuttgart and during his studies collaborated internationally with the Frauenhoff Institute, a German research institute for environmental technology. He participated in several projects for the International Energy Agency – Solar heating & cooling program. The young talented engineer already mastered a full range of simulation programs, which could verify both the energy behavior of buildings and predict the consequences of their usage.

Immediately after graduating, he established his own "spin-off" company TRANSSOLAR near TU Stuttgart, which has become a leading firm in developing energy concepts for buildings and later for cities over the past 15 years. With the help of sophisticated simulation programs and also due to results from years of practice, Matthias Schuler has become a sought-after expert for architects and investors. His method is based on conceptual collaboration with the architect and other professions right from the start of the project. The fundamental considerations in shaping the architectural concept are supported by the parallel creation of an "energy concept," which is based on simple principles of thermodynamics. A significant tool in this parallel method is the continuous simulation of the building's behavior, which serves as a factual argument in professional debates.

Clients of TRANSSOLAR have included architects Helmut Jahn, Stephan Behnisch, Norman Foster, and many others. He has designed energy concepts for the airport in Bangkok, the headquarters of Deutsche Post in Cologne, and other significant buildings. Today, he is the chief advisor in the development of the "sustainable city" MASDAR in Saudi Arabia….
