OFFCITY ARCHITECTS
PAVEL JANŠTA

Thursday, November 13, 2014, at 19:00 at Divadlo 29 / Sv. Anežky České 29, Pardubice

The penultimate lecture of this year's Offcity series on urban development and planning will not welcome an architect or a city official, but rather a politician, an elected representative who directly creates and implements visions related to the city's development. In this case, successfully, transparently, and with a positive spirit.

Pavel Janšta, the Deputy Mayor of the seven-thousand-strong South Bohemian town of Vodňany, decided four years ago to intervene in the affairs of his city. On the platform of the civic association Vodňany žijou, the electoral party Vodňany for Change was created, which succeeded in the municipal elections, and Pavel Janšta thus became the Deputy Mayor.

During one electoral term, a lot was achieved in Vodňany. Among other things, the reconstruction of the Blanice sports complex was successfully completed according to the winning project from the architectural competition by Edit! Architects, and the visual style of the city was changed. Last but not least, the forest park in Zátiší began to undergo significant transformation. The initiation of this transformation, entitled re:vodňany, was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix of the Association of Architects for Architectural Design - small architecture or artistic work in architecture in 2012. The change in this location stemmed from emotional maps, which were created with the participation of Vodňany residents. Zátiší, although a remote place on the outskirts of the city, was shown to be somewhat controversial in these emotional maps. Many enjoyed spending their free time there, while others considered it ugly or even frightening. The process revealed that it was a neglected place, albeit with great potential, which was uncovered through the re:vodňany project.

Four years were enough for changes, to have a vision and the energy to realize it. How does one search for an architect for such small projects? Does Vodňany have its city architect? And can a small town be an inspiration for a larger one?

Admission: 50 CZK

The last lecture of this year's series on urban development and planning will take us to nearby Litomyšl, which the professional architectural community views as a city where interesting and quality architecture is emerging that transcends the regional framework. Architect Zdeňka Vydrová, who has been serving here as an external city architect since 1992, will guide us through the architecture and urbanism of Litomyšl.
