The debate will be moderated by Kateřina Huberová, moderator of Czech Radio Ostrava

The debate will focus on the relationship between the heritage environment, monuments, and new architecture. It will attempt to show possible answers to the following questions: What can be understood by the term new architecture in a historical environment? What can the relationship between new architecture and heritage be? Does heritage protection represent a barrier to city development or, conversely, an opportunity for new quality? Various approaches to the given topic will be presented through examples of completed (extension of Ostrava-Svinov railway station, architect Václav Filandr), currently ongoing (new conference center in the gas holder in the Lower Area of Vítkovice, architect Josef Pleskot) or planned (extension to the House of Art of the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, architect Josef Pleskot) extensions and reconstructions of monuments. There will be short presentations of the mentioned projects. The second half of the debate will provide space for questions from the audience and discussion, during which we will also turn our attention to unused opportunities for the rehabilitation of Ostrava's historical environment. Such unused opportunities include the postponed rescue of the former municipal abattoir, the uncertain fate of the block of the former Palace Hotel, the managed decay of the monumentally protected complex of the Textilia department store, and questions surrounding Černá louka.

The event takes place as part of the media theme of the National Heritage Institute New in the Old. Contemporary architecture and the historic city.
