The KRUH association continues its autumn lecture series on architecture. The topic of reuse in architecture and art will be presented on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 7:30 PM at the Světozor cinema in Prague by British architect from 6a architects and professor at ETH University in Zurich, Tom Emerson.
Tom Emerson is coming to Prague at the invitation of KRUH for the second time. His lecture in 2014 on reuse generated great interest among the audience, which is why he will speak at KRUH for the exceptional second time. The lecture titled "Never Modern" focused on the role of stories, history, and appropriation in work and was based on the book of the same name, which Tom Emerson co-authored with Irénée Scalbert.

“It's not just about the reuse of old buildings or their materials, but also about recycling stories that support the emergence of a new authorship approach. The approach of reuse is applicable in 21st-century architecture and contrasts with the modernist paradigm of building everything anew,” says Tom Emerson regarding the lecture topic.

Tom Emerson co-founded the 6a architects studio in London with Stephanie Macdonald in 2001, which has since become one of the most recognized offices in Britain. Their designs involve the reuse of already existing elements or what is readily available. In 2012, 6a architects received the Schelling Medal for Architecture and the National RIBA Award. They are the authors of several contemporary art galleries in London. Among their notable projects is the Tree House, a compact wooden structure that wraps around an existing tree, and two new studio buildings in the Design District in London. Tom Emerson has been teaching at the prestigious ETH University in Zurich since 2010, where he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Design and Architecture from 2021 to 2023, overseeing the direction of architecture at this prestigious faculty. Together with students, he creates models the size of pavilions to explore both the structural possibilities of materials and the spatial properties of their designs. For instance, according to their design, the voluminous and spatial wooden structure (Pavilion of Reflections) was created at a lake in Zurich in 2016. Tom Emerson is also the author of numerous articles not only on architecture but also on art and literature.

“Tom Emerson’s presentation was one of the most interesting lectures in the last 10 years that have taken place at KRUH. As an architect, he creates tension between old and new both spatially and in material choice. As an educator, he aims to engage students in the construction process, and they also realize large-scale projects together...” says Marcela Steinbachová, the chairwoman of the KRUH association, regarding Tom Emerson’s invitation.

Tom Emerson's lecture will take place on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 7:30 PM in the Great Hall of the Světozor cinema, Vodičkova 791/41, Nové Město, Prague. The basic admission fee for the event is 150 CZK, with a discounted price of 130 CZK for students or seniors. Tickets can be purchased through the reservation system of the Světozor cinema. The last lecture of the series will be held on December 7, 2023, in the Great Hall of the Světozor cinema, featuring the Swiss prominent statician Jürg Conzett, the author of many interesting bridges and footbridges in Switzerland.
