Marta Peris and José Toral are architects who cannot be overlooked in the global discourse on new approaches to social housing. Through their work, they repeatedly confirm that affordable housing is an evolving topic with strategic social impact and the ability to remind architecture of its original mission – to improve everyday life.
The studio specializes in researching new ways of living and building, combining innovative spatial solutions with an emphasis on community life and sustainability. Their projects often include shared spaces that encourage interaction among residents, and they utilize natural materials to reduce environmental impact. By more freely dimensioning residential spaces and thoughtful flexibility, they challenge typological stereotypes and norms.
One of their most famous works is the project of 85 social apartments in Cornellà de Llobregat (2021), which has earned them several awards, including the RIBA International Prize 2024 and being named a finalist for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022.
They write, publish, and lecture wherever they share their need for radical change in the concept of social housing. Both are part of the faculty at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Barcelona and also serve as guest professors at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.
