Baroque Church in Horní Jiřetín and Architect Jean Baptiste Mathey

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the town of Horní Jiřetín is an endangered building, as it could disappear along with the entire town after the mining limits for brown coal in the Podkrušnohorsko region are broken. It is a work of the famous architect of French origin Jean Baptiste Mathey, built between 1694-1700 at the instigation of Prague Archbishop Jan Bedřich of Valdštejn.

Therefore, the heads of departments and institutes of art history at universities in Prague, Brno, Olomouc, Ústí nad Labem, České Budějovice, Ostrava, and Opava, in cooperation with the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague, the town of Horní Jiřetín, and the Roman Catholic parish of Horní Jiřetín, have decided to organize a scientific conference.
