On Wednesday, November 7, 2018, the third part of a lecture series will take place, aimed at presenting to the public significant topics and notable buildings of local architecture in key periods of our history in the 20th century, directly related to the architectural milieu in Plzeň as well as the form, structure, and possibilities of society and its representatives at both local and regional levels. The part focused on the period around 1968 will feature historian Miroslav Breitfelder and architect and architectural historian Petr Klíma, hosted by the Ural hotel building (now Central), built from 1968 to 1972.

Was the so-called Prague Spring a coincidence, an accident, or a result of the development of Czechoslovak society, which was also reflected in the politics of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia? This is the question that Miroslav Breitfelder from the Department of History at the Faculty of Education of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň will explore in his contribution. He will also point out that Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev wanted to send troops to Czechoslovakia as early as 1966.

Petr Klíma from the organizing association Pěstuj prostor will focus in his lecture on the architecture of Plzeň in the second half of the 1960s on exceptional standalone buildings – the Prior Department Store, the ice hockey stadium, the building of the Styl factory, and particularly the Ural hotel, whose realization was preceded by a surge in local civil society – but he will also not overlook the residential development of the time and the city’s master plan.

The admission fee for the lecture is 50 CZK, tickets will be available on-site and in advance.

Through a series of four lectures, the Pěstuj prostor association aims to support and develop the interest of the local professional and broader public in architecture and the built and landscape environment of the city. The series is prepared by architect and architectural historian Petr Klíma in cooperation with other members of the Pěstuj prostor association, supported by the city of Plzeň, the Czech Ministry of Culture, the Czech Architecture Foundation, and the State Cultural Fund.
