Aaron Betsky

Aaron Betsky, a renowned architecture theorist, curator, and current director of The School of Architecture at Taliesin, will give a lecture on the history of modernism and its influence on contemporary concepts of space during his stop in Brno on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at 6:00 PM at the House of Art on Malinovské náměstí 2. The lecture will be in English.

"In the ball courtyard, where the French Revolution was declared, on the Vienna Ringstrasse, in the workshops of England, and in places that transformed the United States into a democratic country, the concept of open space emerged. It was a new phenomenon: abstract, formed by geometry and technology, utilized by a new middle class. Over time, modernist space gave rise to a new style and method of building that we began to call modernism. The lecture will return to the roots and circumstances of the emergence of modernist space, describe its expansion and gradual crystallization, and show how it has permeated our lives on a global scale. Finally, it will seek to answer whether modern space still exists, and if so, where and how."
