Zlín - The former 15th building of the Baťa industrial complex in the center of Zlín was opened to the public today for the first time after a complete renovation. The building will serve the František Bartoš Regional Library. This completed the project of the Baťa Institute, which, in addition to the 15th building, includes the 14th building, where the regional gallery of fine arts and the Museum of Southeast Moravia in Zlín have been located since May. The project cost over 900 million crowns, said regional councilor Ladislav Kryštof (ČSSD) to journalists today.
The library thus gained more than twice the space it had available in the former historic building. It was able to consolidate all of its storage scattered around the city, with a total of over 7,000 square meters, of which about half serves the public. The library owns 265,000 books, 160,000 of which are available on open shelves. It also offers periodicals, sound and audiovisual documents, maps, and standards.
The new spaces, which have retained their industrial character, allowed for the introduction of modern elements. Readers have access to dozens of computers with internet access, book lending machines, and a self-service book return system located in the library's vestibule.
“It will be open from 07:00, so people can return books on their way to work or school, and in the afternoon they can come back to borrow a book during regular opening hours,” said library director Zdeňka Friedlová. The library will start operating in regular mode from Monday, with opening hours on weekdays from 09:00 to 19:00, on Wednesday from 12:00 to 19:00, and on Saturday from 09:00 to 12:00.
Library staff moved the book collection from the beginning of July to the end of August, and in September they organized the books in the new spaces and equipped them. The underground storage of the library is located under the platform connecting the 14th and 15th buildings, where the garages are also located. The library building includes lecture and multipurpose halls, as well as a café.
The renovation of the 14th and 15th buildings, which were built between 1946 and 1948 according to the design of architect Jiří Voženílek, began two years ago. The region received a European grant of 481 million crowns for the project.
