Zlín – Zlín announced an architectural competition for the completion of the municipal building complex in the city center. The city hall expects an investment of approximately 100 million crowns excluding VAT in the first phase of the redevelopment, spokesperson Tomáš Melzer stated today in a press release. The results of the competition should be known this fall.
"The competition was primarily prompted by the poor technical condition of some buildings that are part of the town hall, leading to spatial constraints. Moreover, it is time for building number 10, the space that housed the Minutka café, to once again be a dignified part of the town hall and the entire Míru Square," said Mayor Jiří Korec (ANO).
The current form of the town hall was established 100 years ago. "The city leadership at that time was looking for a replacement for the unsuitable 16th-century town hall building through a public competition. The legendary construction of Zlín's urbanism, F. L. Gahura, emerged from this competition and still serves as the main seat of the city," added the spokesperson.
This year, Zlín is commemorating 700 years since the first written mention of the city. "We believe that the initiation of the architectural competition for the completion of the town hall in the anniversary year of 700 years of the city is symbolic. We would like to build upon the very high-quality interwar Zlín architecture. This extension will also significantly improve the functionality of the current town hall building and become another impetus for the revitalization of the square. The practical and functional aspect of the new extension is also important to us," stated the mayor's deputy Pavel Brada.
The architectural competition will take the form of a competitive dialogue, with applications possible until April 4. "The evaluation committee will first select six participants from the registered studios, with whom a workshop will subsequently take place on the developed proposals. Emphasis will be placed on the first implementation phase, during which building number 10, which has been vacant for several years and has been temporarily statically secured, should be replaced. In the second phase, other buildings in the immediate vicinity of the historic building should be replaced. The second implementation phase then represents the ideal final form of the architectural complex of municipal buildings, including the possible completion of the inner block and the reconstruction of building number 15," the spokesperson added.
