The installation of the statue took place immediately after Terunobu Fujimori's lecture at the Reduta.
Brno - Today, builders installed a statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Zelný trh in Brno. The work by Kurt Gebauer was placed by a crane on a specially made column in front of the Reduta Theatre. The author supervised the work. The location of the statue in front of the Reduta Theatre is not accidental; Mozart once performed here as a child prodigy.
The base of the statue consists of a several-meter-high sandstone pillar. "At the top is a bronze clavichord, and balancing on its edge is a figure of Cupid with one wing," described Zuzana Gregorová from the city hall's press department. Gebauer interprets the statue as depicting Mozart as a virtuoso, an artist, and a balancer, which he was in his time. The angel, however, has only one wing, symbolizing Mozart's tragic end, Gebauer said.
City representatives originally wanted to place the statue of Mozart in Zelný trh only after its planned reconstruction. However, they ultimately changed their minds, said city hall spokesman Pavel Žára today to ČTK.
The statue of Mozart is the first of about ten that are to adorn Brno in the coming years. The "Statues for Brno" project was initiated by the previous city administration. Following Mozart, Thomas Alva Edison will be next. His statue will take the form of light bulbs and will adorn the space near the Mahen Theatre, which was the first theatre building in Europe to be illuminated by electricity in 1882.
In the coming weeks, about twenty more statues will beautify Brno's squares and corners - during the "Statues in the Streets" exhibition, art from galleries is to move closer to the people. One of the works will remain in Brno. The council approved the purchase of a statue titled "90th Anniversary" by Slovak artist Michal Moravčík. The statue will adorn the garden of the Tugendhat Villa and commemorate the joint state of Czechs and Slovaks. Former prime ministers of both countries signed the agreement on its dissolution at the Tugendhat Villa.
