Prague - Sculptor and professor at the Arts and Crafts University Kurt Gebauer is one of the most significant figures in Czech visual arts. The artist, who will celebrate his 70th birthday on August 18, began as a stone sculptor and is mainly known to the artistic public for his preference for unconventional materials and installations in parks and other public spaces. Gebauer focuses on assemblages, experiments with various often waste materials, and has uniquely appropriated the technique of so-called soft sculpture made from textiles, plastics, wires, twigs, and anything, even raw vegetables. His work is based on sometimes absurdly deformed modeling and relies on the element of surprise. He is also known as a great promoter of his hometown Hradec nad Moravicí.
