Brno - The Railway Administration (SŽ) has begun assessing the environmental impacts of the construction of the new Brno main railway station and the reconstruction of the railway hub, according to a document on the EIA Information Portal. The website Zdopravy.cz drew attention to it. The August document still operates with the timeline of starting construction in 2028, although at the turn of last year and this year, SŽ spokesperson Dušan Gavenda wrote to ČTK that this year is an optimistic timeline for the announcement of the tender for the construction contractor, which is expected to last for eight years.
SŽ has published detailed plans for the reconstruction of the Brno hub for the first time, the core of which will be the new station one kilometer south of the current main station. It will be built on the site of the lower station, which during normal operations only serves freight transport. In June of this year, SŽ's general director Jiří Svoboda stated on platform X that the reconstruction of the hub is expected to cost approximately 73 billion crowns.
Part of the hub reconstruction includes the dismantling of tracks including the line from Horní Heršpice through the main station to Židenice and the construction of new tracks, as well as the construction of a stop in Brno-Černovice with a transfer terminal. The railway workers included the timelines of individual constructions that are to precede or be built in parallel with the hub reconstruction in the document. The first is the reconstruction of the section between Židenice and the Černovice junction, which is slated to begin this year, with completion expected by 2027. The reconstruction of the Židenice station, which involves bringing the platform closer to Bubeníčkova Street, is planned for 2025 to 2026. The new four-track section for speeds of 200 kilometers per hour from the Černovice junction to Blažovice (the so-called new Přerov line) is planned for construction from 2028 to 2032. According to railway officials, during the same timeline the high-speed line from Brno to Velká Bíteš (to Prague) will be constructed, and from 2027 to 2031 a fast line from Brno to Rakvice.
Alongside the new station, a transfer terminal on Vídeňská Street is also set to be built. Although timelines are not yet specified, there are also plans for an underground railway that will connect the north and south of Brno.
It is envisioned that the main station will have two tracks dedicated to freight transport, 17 tracks for passenger services, and the line from Chrlice will end in a tunnel beneath the main station’s tracks in a perpendicular position to the station tracks.
The main station will also have 1,200 parking spaces available, with about 70 more in Židenice and Černovice.
The document states that construction will only take place between 7:00 AM and 9:00 PM. A role will also be established for a person who will convey suggestions and complaints from residents to the builders.
According to railway officials, Brno cannot do without a new station, as the current one has long been at capacity limits and can only accommodate additional connections with great difficulty. After the planned start of high-speed operations in the 2030s, it will not suffice at all. At the same time, due to its eccentric location, it will be necessary for the city to complete urban infrastructure on time, including tram and trolleybus lines and roads, which will enable services to the station. Currently, the lower station and its surroundings are essentially without significant connectivity.
