Prague - Those interested in organizing cultural and social events at Malostranské náměstí in Prague, from which a parking lot disappeared at the beginning of the month, can apply through the newly accessible online questionnaire. Proposals will be evaluated by a working group composed of residents and representatives of local organizations and the municipality.

The space above the tram stop was freed of cars at the beginning of July. Residents immediately began using the place for social gatherings. This should continue to be the case. The city leadership wants the square to come alive and is giving people the opportunity to do so. The ban applies only to advertising, political, and private events. On the contrary, public programs will be welcomed; there has been talk of a dance hall, theatrical performances, or yoga sessions.

According to the city hall's promise, more greenery, bike racks, and possibly a drinking fountain or a mobile café will be added to the square. The Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) is also preparing a complete renovation of Malostranský rynek. An expert jury in September 2014 selected the proposal by architects Martin Hájek, Václav Hájek, and Petr Horský in an international architectural competition. According to IPR director Petr Hlaváček, a working group will be formed to prepare the reconstruction. "If everything goes well, it could start in 2018. The winning proposal is just a symbolic first step," he recently told ČTK.

Some MPs who had previously parked there disagreed with the removal of the parking lot in recent weeks. Prague will negotiate with the Chamber of Deputies about alternative parking options.
