Terezín - Terezín in Litoměřice wants to open to the public next October the renovated Wieser House in honor of the 240th anniversary of the founding of the town. The reconstruction is complicated by discovered defects that were not anticipated. The original completion date has been pushed back by about two months. The cost of reconstruction is estimated at 122 million crowns. The town has also had other monuments, the historical sewage system, and lighting renovated, said Deputy Mayor Martin Pala today to ČTK.

The repair of the former residence of Kašpar Wieser, the main supplier of materials for the construction of the Terezín military fortress, is complicated by the floor in the representative hall. The floor is supposed to remain original, said Róbert Czetmayer, the secretary of the town hall and deputy director of the organization Terezín - city of change, to ČTK. He added, however, that wood-damaging pests have been found in it.

The town has also repaired other buildings. "It includes the riding hall, Kavalír 2, Litoměřická Gate, artillery barracks; nine buildings destroyed by floods have also been repaired, as well as the historical sewage system," the deputy mayor listed what the town has repaired for 460 million crowns since 2014. The town received state subsidies for repairs with a fifty-million budget.

The region is now negotiating with Terezín over the transfer of some monuments to state administration. The town has offered the association Terezín - city of change, the fortress, the armory, and Žižka Barracks. "I agree that the monuments should be repaired and potentially revitalizing the town of Terezín should occur," said the deputy mayor. The town does not have the money to take care of the monuments.

About 3000 people live in Terezín. Despite the fact that the monuments in the town are heavily visited, residents are rather disappearing from the town. Locals infer that this is due to its sad history. Between 1941 and 1945, the Nazis interned 155,000 Jews from all over Europe in the Terezín ghetto. About 117,000 of them did not survive to see liberation. A total of 32,000 men and women passed through the Gestapo prison in the Small Fortress. 2600 perished in Terezín, and thousands more in other concentration camps to which they were transferred by the Nazis.
