The water tower in Kolín could become a cultural monument

Kolín - The former water tower in Kolín, which is one of the city’s landmarks, may be declared a cultural monument. The Ministry of Culture, which will lead the administrative proceedings in this matter, has requested the opinion of the city. The councilors leaned towards the option that the water tower should become a cultural monument. However, the final decision rests solely with the ministry, said Mayor Vít Rakušan (Change for Kolín) to ČTK.

"We are part of the administrative proceedings, the Ministry of Culture decides, they only ask us for our opinion," Rakušan stated, adding that the ministry does not have to follow the city’s recommendation. If the water tower were declared a cultural monument, it would mean certain limitations on its use. Today, however, the tower is empty and is not being utilized.
According to information from the town hall, there is also consideration for the future designation of water tanks in Pečky and Poděbrady as cultural monuments.
The Kolín water tower was built in 1930 and is the work of architects František Janda and Jan Hráský. The original owner, a water management company, sold it to a private owner years ago, who then sold it to another interested party. In the meantime, the building fell into disrepair. Ultimately, it was acquired by the city.
