Přerov - The leadership of Přerov today approved a proposal for the demolition of the nine-story Strojař hotel building and the construction of new community apartments for seniors in its place during a special council meeting. The city purchased the property from the Ministry of Defense this year for 40.5 million korunas due to concerns about the establishment of another social housing facility. The city also paid an additional 1.6 million for the transfer of the hotel. Councilors also proposed to prepare an architectural-urban planning competition to address the area once occupied by the Strojař building. This was communicated to ČTK by city hall spokeswoman Lenka Chalupová.

The city has been searching for a use for Strojař. "Of all the options we considered, demolition of the old building and the construction of a new one emerged as the best solution. The location near the Bečva River - in sight of the heritage zone - is strategic, and we want to give it a pleasant character and meaningful use for social purposes," stated councilor Petr Vrána (ANO).

Therefore, the councilors propose that the representatives declare an architectural-urban planning competition to address this area. It concerns the territory bounded by the streets Velká Dlážka, Brabansko, and the Rudolf Lukaštík waterfront. According to city representatives, a community house offering individual apartments for seniors over 60 years old, as well as joint activities in a community center, could potentially receive a subsidy of up to 600,000 korunas per apartment.

Due to the new plans, the city must anticipate an investment in the range of several tens of millions of korunas. "The purchase of Strojař cost us 42 million korunas. The demolition is expected to cost around 20 million. The construction of two community houses for seniors would amount to 80 million without subsidy; if a subsidy is obtained, it would only be 50 million," stated deputy mayor Tomáš Navrátil (ANO). The city is also considering purchasing the adjacent land for 9.5 million korunas. Additional costs will be incurred for the architectural-urban planning competition and further documentation.

The Strojař hotel building was completed in 1968 and served as accommodation for employees of the Přerov engineering works. Later, professional soldiers stayed here until they vacated the building at the end of 2013. The property has 144 rooms and 369 beds, along with a restaurant and a heat exchange station.

The Ministry of Defense has been offering the building for sale since January 2014. Initially, the army demanded 62 million for it, but the price was gradually reduced. The city initially tried to obtain the building for free, which ultimately did not succeed. After two interested parties responded in the last round of bidding, the city decided to purchase the building. The reason was the concern that it would become another social housing facility. There are already about twenty of them in the city.
