The leadership of Prague approved the design of the terminal in Smíchov

Prague – The Prague City Hall will assign designers to start preparing documentation for the zoning decision of the planned transport terminal at Smíchov Station. The city council approved the final form today, based on which the consortium of companies Metroprojekt, Sudop EU, Sudop Praha, and the A69 architect studio will prepare the project. The design of the terminal's roof has slightly changed from the original plans, and the headquarters of the Railway Administration (SŽ) has also been removed from the project, for which a special architectural competition was announced.

The terminal will allow transfers between the metro, trams, trains, and suburban connections. The terminal will be covered, and the current bus stop at Na Knížecí will be relocated to the upper floor above the train station. The train station building will be renovated, with its central part becoming part of the terminal, and a fourth train platform will be added. The project includes the construction of a P+R parking building for 1,000 cars.

The designers of the terminal were selected by the city in a competition last March, and before commencing work on the documentation for the zoning decision, the council had to approve the final form once again according to the contract with the suppliers. According to the approved document, the structure of the terminal's roofing has been slightly revised, which should have a darker color in addition to structural changes. From an urban perspective, the biggest change is the allocation of the current southern wing of the station, where the new headquarters of SŽ and possibly other state companies or institutions will be located.

Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček (for TOP 09) said today that the city expects the terminal to open in 2026. "We anticipate two to three years of construction preparation and approximately two years for construction," he stated. He added that the costs for the city, which will mainly include the construction of the new bus terminal and P+R parking lot, are estimated to exceed two billion crowns. Another deputy mayor, Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě), added that the project considers the use of modern methods, for example, in water management or the use of renewable energy sources.

"The capital city of Prague has decided to install a prototype of a part of the roofing in the existing Smíchov Terminal," further states the approved document. This is intended both to test new technologies and to familiarize the public with the design. The prototype is expected to appear at the station this year.

According to the city's plans, the terminal will have several levels. Pedestrian underpasses will lead from Nádražní Street to the platforms. The second level will house the station itself, which will be at the same level as today, and above it is planned to have the terminal for suburban and long-distance buses. The metro will be located below the terminal. All levels and modes of transport will be interconnected.

The city is coordinating the work with SŽ, which will be responsible mainly for the renovation of the train station building and the railway station, including the repair of the platforms and the creation of one new one and the repair of underpasses. A footbridge will also be built over the railway, connecting Smíchov, Radlice, and the developing district of Smíchov City between the station and Na Knížecí.
