Svitavy - After several years of reconstruction, the new information, educational, and cultural center Fabrika will open to the public in Svitavy on Thursday, May 29. The next two days are reserved for open days and cultural programs, said city hall spokesman Kamil Vařeka to ČTK. Svitavy had the center built from a former factory with the help of a European Union grant. The reconstruction of the old industrial building from 1925 began in 2005 according to the project of architect Roman Svojanovský. "The name Fabrika evokes the original purpose of the building, which was built in the 1920s by textile industry entrepreneur Wilhelm Ettl. The massive four-story building, constructed near the back sections of historic townhouses, gradually became part of the city center," Vařeka stated. Fabrika is home to a modern library that also includes a music department, an internet café, and a study room. The building also features a hall that can be used for conference and theatrical purposes. It is equipped with translation booths for holding international conferences and audiovisual technology for cultural events. The auditorium is variable and can be transformed into a theater, dance, or conference setting. Visitors to the center will also find a restaurant for 80 people and a lounge with half the capacity. Fabrika also houses the Krůček Mother Center, the Seniors' Club, the University of the Third Age, the Social Services Center, the multicultural Civic Association Čavoro, and the Regional Chamber of Commerce. Other Svitavy associations can also use the facility. A television studio for cable television CMS TV is located on the first floor of Fabrika. Accessible balconies and galleries on the individual floors of the central part of the building will allow for the presentation of exhibitions of paintings and photographs. Fabrika includes a connecting corridor that can be walked through the center of the building from Míru Square to Komenského Square, where a new parking lot for 140 vehicles has been built. The costs of reconstructing the old industrial building reached 185 million crowns without VAT. Of this, 100 million crowns came from a European Union grant, 17 million from the state budget, and the remainder was covered by the Svitavy city hall.
