Strakonice - A medieval castle and Podskalí in Strakonice have been connected by a suspension bridge across the Otava River. The city invested 17 million crowns into the construction, and an additional 46 million was provided by the European Union from the Regional Operational Program. The ceremonial opening of the bridge will take place on November 12, spokesperson for the town hall Marie Kotlíková told ČTK today. The bridge from the brewery to the castle, designed by architect Iveta Torkoniaková, connects to the entrance to Podskalí on the left bank and to the castle moat with the safari and the western castle gate on the right. It is 110 meters long and four meters wide. A new bike path, which was part of the project, leads 1.5 kilometers toward Mutěnice from it. The city is now looking for a suitable name for the bridge. Construction began this spring. It will serve not only local residents but also tourists. Cyclists coming downstream along the bike path will now be able to visit the castle, and paddlers on the right bank of the river previously had no place to disembark. In the place where there used to be an unsightly shaded bank with stones and mud, an area with stone steps has been created, allowing swimmers easy access to the water and providing good disembarkation for paddlers. Some residents who do not like the suspension bridge believe the city should have invested millions in something else. However, others admire it, such as Vlasta Jarolímková. According to her, it is unusual and fits into the environment. "I go to the weir by the castle to swim in the summer. When construction began, I watched it with concern. But now I have to say that the bridge is beautiful and reminds me of the bridges I’ve seen around the world,” she told ČTK. The ceremonial opening on the evening of November 12 will be accompanied by lighting as well as a stilt performance by the Minotaurus theater and a demonstration by the Strakonice historical fencing group Vendeta.
