Varnsdorf

Varnsdorf – The fifteen-thousand-strong Varnsdorf in the Děčín region is looking for a new city architect. The leadership expects that they will help locals with building houses and also with the development of the city center, which lacks a proper square. This was stated by Deputy Mayor Jiří Sucharda (ODS) to ČTK.

"First of all, we want them to help the people. A lot is being built here, 20 to 30 houses a year. We want the public to be able to come to see them twice a month. We also want them to give us their opinion on the completion of the square renovation. We do not have a square," said Sucharda. The reconstruction of the main square had been planned by the previous city leadership, but the area is still used as a parking lot.

The city is expecting several significant projects, such as an extension of the Východní elementary school or the construction of a new park with a riverbank. According to Sucharda, there are several planned constructions in the city that should be addressed by someone competent. The city hall also expects that the selected architect will be a politic-free, prominent, and respected personality.

The former external architect resigned, making it the second architect in the modern history of the city to have worked in Varnsdorf. The city leadership attended a meeting of the Urbanism Commission of the Czech Chamber of Architects, which oversees city architects. The commission assigned two qualified professional representatives to the selection committee. The selection will be assisted by the chairman of the urbanism commission and a member of the board of the Association for Urbanism and Spatial Planning, architect Milan Košař, and David Mateásko, architect of the city of Kolín. Sucharda added that he hopes someone will apply for the selection process.
