Varnsdorf – A modern park for athletes and mothers with children is to be created on the site of the dilapidated former textile factory complex in Varnsdorf in the Děčín region. The city hall also plans to build a riverside promenade by the Mandava river, described deputy mayor Jiří Sucharda.
The building on Západní street has been unused, abandoned, and deteriorating since the 1990s. It has become a refuge for homeless people and has often caught fire. At the end of 2018, the city purchased the ruin from a private owner for 350,000 crowns with the intention of demolishing it. "The demolition of the building would cost us about ten million crowns, so we are waiting for the announcement of a suitable grant program," Sucharda stated. He noted that such a program had already been announced, but it was not intended for cities. In the factory complex, there is a chimney that the city will keep on site as a reminder of history.
Instead of a ruin, the city aims to build a modern skatepark with a park and relaxation zone in the coming years. The city hall has commissioned a study and is currently preparing project documentation.
The future park area should be integrated into the landscape and supplemented with more greenery. "It's not a classic skatepark, more like metal obstacles," said Sucharda. The concrete shaped areas will also serve for the relaxation of families visiting the park, and will be complemented with seating and other elements. The city is also considering a workout area.
The space should connect to the adjacent bike path on Barvířská street and the sports complex next to the swimming pool. "We want to unify it," stated the deputy mayor.
