Liberec - The Liberec City Hall must have both large glass panels of the Liberec Memorial to the Victims of Communism repaired. The panels were damaged by vandals in two different incidents. The repair of the first panel has been planned by the city hall since last November, but it has not yet been commissioned. The second panel has likely been destroyed since New Year's Eve. The damage is estimated at about 300,000 crowns. This was stated today by the city hall spokesperson Zuzana Minstrová. "We will combine the repair of both panels into a single contract. The production of specially hardened glass will be particularly demanding, and it will take about two months," said the spokesperson. According to her estimate, the memorial could be repaired by the end of April. The renovation of the memorial will be paid for by the insurance company; the police have so far been unable to trace the culprit in either case. The police suspect that the breaking of the second panel and the damage of 150,000 crowns is the responsibility of an intoxicated person who passed by the memorial on New Year's Eve. "An unknown individual likely struck the mirror panel of the structure with a glass bottle and caused a noticeable spiderweb-like crack," said police spokesperson Ivana Baláková. The memorial, costing 1.2 million crowns, was originally supposed to be placed in the castle park along Guttenberg Street, but was ultimately unveiled in 2006 in the park along Jablonecká Street. It has the form of a cube made of mirrored glass panels set into a steel frame on two sides. At the base of the memorial, a mirror-inverted inscription is embedded into the pavement, readable in reflection: "In yourself seek whether you defend, respect, or limit freedom."
