Uherský Brod (Uherskohradišťsko) - A new footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists named Všezvěd has been opened over the Olšava River in Uherský Brod. At the same time, the cornerstone for the adjacent Všudybud footbridge was laid, which will span the busy road I/50. Its completion is expected next year. Both footbridges, along with the connecting bike path, will ensure the connection of Slovácké náměstí with the Olšava housing estate, said Mayor Patrik Kunčar (KDU-ČSL) today to ČTK. The costs for both phases amount to 48 million crowns, of which 23 million crowns come from a grant from the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
"The Olšava housing estate is a long-term cut-off part of the city. We were thinking about how to bring it closer to the city center and make the road, which is quite busy, more pleasant for pedestrians," Kunčar stated. Both footbridges are designed to be barrier-free. Thanks to them, pedestrians and cyclists can also feel safer.
The authors of the footbridges' design are Zbyněk Ryška and Jan Skoupý from the architectural studio Refuel. According to Ryška, the bridges are intended to represent gates into and out of the city. "We were inspired by Jan Amos Comenius's book, where in the Labyrinth of the World (and Paradise of the Heart) there are also two gates to the city. So we took the names of the guide, the pilgrim Všezvěd and Všudybud, and split them into two footbridges," Ryška explained. Comenius lived in Uherský Brod in his youth and, according to some historians, was even born in the city.
The dominant element of the new footbridge is a pylon approximately 20 meters high. Its suspended structure is made of steel, which, according to Raška, gives the building a light and airy feel. Work on the footbridge began last autumn. The completion of the second footbridge is planned for June next year. Each footbridge will be 68 meters long. The construction also includes landscaping, the relocation of a field path and overhead power lines, the installation of new street lighting, furniture, traffic signage, and landscaping modifications.
The footbridges are among other transport constructions that have significantly changed or are set to change the appearance of Uherský Brod. Last year, the town hall completed the construction of a transport terminal that connected bus, rail, and urban public transportation. Twelve covered bus stands were created, as well as a new operational building for bus drivers and dispatchers, and the train station building and platforms were renovated.
Thanks to saved funds from the Swiss-Czech Cooperation Program, from which Uherský Brod and its partner, the Railway Transport Administration, funded the terminal project, parking lots have been created in follow-up projects. The so-called large stairs and bus stops in the city have also been repaired, and the railway station platforms have been improved. Moreover, as early as 2010, in the first phase of the terminal construction, the city built a bridge with a pedestrian access footbridge.
