Třebíč - The former Jewish hospital has been included among cultural monuments in Třebíč. The building, which is part of the structure of the former Jewish ghetto, has been deteriorating for several decades and is in poor technical condition. The last residents were socially vulnerable people. A private investor is preparing the reconstruction of the historic building, which he purchased from the city last year, said Ivan Přibík, spokesperson for the Třebíč city hall, to ČTK today.
The so-called hospital on Pomezní Street was built by the Jewish community in 1852. The hospital had 24 beds. After the dissolution of the Jewish community during World War II, the building became a nursing home. Seniors were then replaced by less adaptable residents. Now the building has been empty for over a year. It spoils the appearance of the Jewish quarter, which is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
The general renovation of the building is being prepared by the company Kapucín. Managing director Martin Svoboda told ČTK that the former hospital will be converted into apartments for students or regular tenants. The designation of the building as a monument does not bother him. He stated that he is already working with conservationists in preparing the project.
The Jewish quarter in Třebíč is one of the most significant and oldest centers of Jewish settlement in Moravia. The history of its formation dates back at least to the 13th century. The quarter has been listed in the UNESCO register since 2003.
According to data on the regional website, the Vysočina region has over 3,000 immovable cultural monuments recorded in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. More are still being added. This year, a rural building from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Spytice near Vilémov was also declared a cultural monument.
