Brno/Šumná (Znojmo area) - The faithful in Šumná in the Znojmo area are looking forward to a new church. For the last ten years, masses have had to be held in the municipal office's meeting room. The new temple, which is nearing completion, will be consecrated this September by the Bishop of Brno, Vojtěch Cirkle. This weekend, priests will bless the bell. This was reported today by the spokesperson of the bishopric, Martina Jandlová.

Šumná belongs to the parish in Štítary and is one of the youngest municipalities in the Znojmo area - this year it celebrates the 210th anniversary of its founding. The residents considered building a church after World War II. "After 1948, they did not manage to realize this idea," said Štítary priest Marek Dunda.
The plan re-emerged in 1997. The people of Šumná had the cornerstone blessed by Pope John Paul II.
"It was agreed from the very beginning that the church would only be built if there was money for it, that is, not on debt," Dunda stated. The construction was ultimately made possible by subsidies of 1.5 million from the Ministry of Culture and 1.6 million from the South Moravian Region. The faithful also contributed.
The church is designed for 50 seated and 50 standing visitors. It includes a basement clubroom. The architect is Marek Štěpán from Brno, who specializes in church buildings. "The architectural form of the church is simple, based on ancient early Christian longitudinal structures," Štěpán stated.
The temple has a rectangular floor plan and is divided into a tower, nave, and so-called end section. The tower has four floors. The first two house the choir, above them is the bell tower, and at the very top, there is a cross made of concrete. In the interior, Štěpán used sandstone. In the coming years, a fresco will adorn the apse.
Every year, several new churches or at least chapels are built in the Brno diocese. "We try to ensure that the initiative always comes from the people in the given location who want the church," Jandlová said.
