Karviná - A large reconstruction of the cultural house Družba has begun in Karviná, not far from the historical center of the city. The building, from the first half of the 20th century, which was once a popular venue for balls and large cultural events, had been unused for several years and fell into disrepair. The property belonged to the mining company OKD, and the city acquired it last year in exchange for land, said the spokesperson of the magistrate, Šárka Swiderová, today.
The city lacks a hall for organizing larger events and has had to rent spaces in the Darkov spa until now. "The house should serve the widest public again this year for balls, concerts, theaters, dance courses, as well as smaller cultural events for various age groups of residents. There are plans for congresses and conferences in the large hall,” said Deputy Mayor Jan Wolf (ČSSD).
The reconstruction is planned to cost about 115 million crowns, with 50 million crowns successfully obtained by the city from European funds. Renovation could be completed around the transition of October and November.
Once a popular cultural venue in the Fryštát district, it was built about 80 years ago as the Polish Catholic House. In 1945, it was named after Stalin. The name Družba is newer and will ultimately remain with the cultural house.
Last year, the city organized a survey among residents via its website to determine whether to keep the name or change it, but the result was inconclusive. The city council thus ultimately decided to keep the name Družba.
