Karlovy Vary - Citizens of Karlovy Vary have begun voting for the first time in a local referendum. They are deciding whether to replace the Vřídelní colonnade with a replica from the 19th century and to stop emergency repairs on the current one from the 1970s. So far, there has been greater turnout in the polling stations that are next to the rooms where the president of the republic is elected.

Right after the polling stations opened, dozens of people came to cast their votes for or against the construction of the replica cast iron colonnade. For example, at the Dukelských hrdinů Primary School complex on Karlovy Vary’s Moskevská street, there are three polling stations. One for the referendum is in the main building, and in the adjacent building, there is one for the presidential election and one for the referendum.

Where the polling stations for the presidential election and the referendum are next to each other, the vast majority of voters went from one room to the other and voted in both elections. The polling station solely for the referendum in the adjacent building appeared to be less frequented at first glance.

The citizens of Karlovy Vary are responding in the referendum to the question: "Are you in favor of restoring the historic Vřídelní colonnade designed by architects F. Fellner and H. Helmer and terminating the emergency repairs of the current Vřídelní colonnade from 1975?" The current colonnade is partially in a state of emergency. Over the past two years, the city has invested tens of millions primarily into the rehabilitation of the extraction of spring water beneath the colonnade. The well-known spring of Vřídlo had to be relocated in front of the colonnade due to the poor condition of the dome above it.

For the decision in the local referendum to be valid, at least 35 percent of eligible voters must participate. Karlovy Vary, which has around 50,000 inhabitants, has approximately 39,000 voters. To make the referendum valid, at least 13,650 voters would need to participate. For the voting outcome to be binding, at least 9,750 voters would have to vote for one of the options.
