Brno - In the Brno district of Komárov, houses have begun to be demolished in recent days. The demolition is to prepare the ground for a new tram line connecting the city center to the southern district of Komárov. During the preliminary phase of the project, which was approved by the city council before the holidays, 30 houses will be torn down.
Workers have started by tearing down the former railway facility near the track. The preparatory work on Plotní Street, which is expected to last four years, will cost a total of 260 million CZK. The demolition is said not to be particularly challenging, but rather the adjustment of the sewage system.
The construction of approximately 1.5 kilometers of new track is estimated to cost around two billion crowns in total. Trams are expected to start running on the new track in 2016.
Currently, trams to Komárov run along Dornych Street. However, this route will be canceled and replaced by a new one along Plotní Street. Dornych is expected to become a four-lane road as an outlet of the Bratislava radial to the center.
This should improve the transportation accessibility of the part of the city, especially the southern center, which borders Komárov. In the future, extensive construction is planned there - it is expected to be the most modern part of Brno.
