Jablonec nad Nisou - A large part of the Sun Spa complex near the Mšeno dam burned down this morning in Jablonec nad Nisou, leaving about a third intact. The causes and damages are not yet known, according to David Kořínek, spokesman for the Liberec Fire Rescue Service. The buildings, dating from 1927, were in poor condition, and discussions had been ongoing in the city for several years about whether to renovate the historic structures or demolish them and build a modern building in their place.
The fire at the edge of the dam was reported to the operations center around 4:45. "The first unit arrived there ten minutes before five, and the fire was already fully developed. By around 5:30, it was localized. They are still searching for hidden hotspots and extinguishing them; the structures are no longer being dismantled, that has already been done," described Kořínek. Firefighters were drawing water from the nearby dam and also removed propane bottles from the building. "Two dragon boats were successfully saved," added the spokesman.
The Sun Spa was established on the shore of the dam in 1927, offering refreshments and a sun meadow surrounded by a fence and divided into male and female sections. Access was only possible through changing cabins. The complex belongs to the city, but its condition was pitiful. A few years ago, architect Petr Stolín developed a project for a minimalist building intended to replace the dilapidated Sun Spa complex. The light wooden structure with translucent walls was to provide rest and privacy in the shade of a garden atrium and a wider view of the dam from the upper terrace, but it faced opposition from parts of the public.
