Jindřichův Hradec

Jindřichův Hradec - The Castle Rondel in Jindřichův Hradec, which was built as a music pavilion between 1592 and 1597, will once again serve the public after repairs. From March to November, its exterior has fundamentally changed. It has a new roof and façade. The revitalization of the monument cost the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) 5.5 million crowns. People can see it for the first time this upcoming weekend during the Advent markets in the castle grounds; starting next year, it will be part of the tour route, NPÚ director Petr Pavelec told reporters today.

According to him, the Rondel represents one of five preserved Renaissance buildings with a circular floor plan in the Czech Republic. Craftsmen had to remove the damaged roofing, replace the damaged parts of the roof structure, and newly cover it with Prague tiles. The colors of the façade have significantly changed, returning to its Renaissance appearance. The previous look has been replaced with a terracotta color combined with sand.
The Rondel was created at the end of a grand reconstruction of the old castle into a representative Renaissance castle residence. From the beginning of its existence, it was intended for entertainment; its richly decorated interior in the mannerist style served as a venue for balls, concerts, and receptions during the summer months. The interior space of the Rondel is interesting for its acoustic properties, due to which musicians played in the space beneath the floor. From there, a narrow opening led to the middle of the hall, covered by a thin-walled, bottomless vase that transmitted sound from the cellar to the dancing or feasting listeners.
The Rondel served its purposes until the great fire in 1773. In the 19th century, the spaces of the Rondel were mainly used as a pantry, wood-storage, and later even as a stable. Its former appearance returned only after a reconstruction in 1990. Even today, it serves as a space for cultural events, wedding ceremonies, and representative events.
