Havlíčkův Brod - Today in Havlíčkův Brod, people were able to view a medieval cellar for the first time, which was discovered by construction workers during the renovation of the historic center. The tour was part of a day-long celebration for the opening of the restored Havlíčkovo náměstí. The underground vaulted space was found four meters below the roadway of the neighboring Svatovojtěšská street. The town hall decided to preserve it and occasionally make it accessible, said councilor Libor Honzárek (TOP 09) today. The restoration of the historic center of Brod lasted two years; it also involved surrounding streets besides the square. The town received an EU grant for the investment of almost 82 million crowns. The work was carried out according to the design of architect Aleš Burian. The technical networks on Havlíčkovo náměstí were replaced, and the entire area was repaved. A park in the corner of the square was removed, and young trees were planted. A summer stage was built on the central area, along with a kiosk for refreshments. The cellar on Svatovojtěšská street is a remnant of historical houses that had to make way for new construction in the 1970s. "During the demolition, this cellar was partly buried," Honzárek stated. However, the cellar extended beyond the boundaries of the original building. It was discovered while laying utility networks. The town decided to repair the found underground space. A spiral staircase was built to it, ending in a hatch at street level. "It is one of the few examples of authentic underground space in the city," noted the councilor. The cellar covers an area of about 40 square meters. It is carved into rock and partially constructed of masonry. It was likely used for storing food or merchant goods. The floor is currently covered with water to a height of several decimeters. The water had to be pumped out before opening. The medieval underground beneath the houses in the square mostly suffered from insensitive remediation in the 1960s. A reinforced concrete shell was built, which also significantly narrowed their profile, said the councilor. Despite this, these spaces were preserved during the current reconstruction of the square.
