České Budějovice - The construction of the judicial complex at the former barracks of Jan Žižka in České Budějovice officially began today. The complex will house the district court and the public prosecutor's office. Actual work will start in the coming weeks and will last until November 2026. This was stated to journalists today by representatives of the České Budějovice city hall and the Ministry of Justice. The construction of the complex will cost nearly 600 million crowns.
The project involves the renovation of two buildings and one new construction. The new complex will create 2,200 square meters of office space for 180 employees and also 19 meeting rooms.
"I was at the beginning of the project 11 years ago, then nothing happened for a long time, and now I return to the scene of the crime. It is not right for such a beautiful complex to look the way it looks. I believe that the judicial complex will help improve the appearance of České Budějovice," said Minister of Justice Pavel Blažek (ODS).
The dilapidated Jan Žižka barracks in České Budějovice, where the ministry has been considering the establishment of a judicial complex since 2012, were visited by Minister of Justice Blažek last January. He discussed the use of the brownfield site with his party colleagues, Governor Martin Kuba and Mayor Dagmar Škodová Parmová. The faster restoration of the abandoned barracks was complicated by ownership relations. Part of the complex belongs to the Ministry of Justice, part to the city of České Budějovice, and part to the customs office. "Justice has been working since 2006 to beautify this corner of the city. As a result, we will be able to move the district court out of the regional court building. And all South Bohemians will have better conditions to assert their rights," said Chairwoman of the South Bohemian Regional Court Martina Flanderová.
According to the ministry, the construction of the complex comprehensively addresses the functioning of South Bohemian justice, including the possibility of abolishing the branch of the regional court in Tábor. The district court of České Budějovice currently operates at three addresses due to a lack of space. While its civil section or filing office operates on Lidická Street, the criminal and guardianship department is located in the building of the regional court on Zátkův embankment. Part of the document archive had to be moved to Trhové Sviny.
