České Budějovice – České Budějovice have suspended the planned project to convert the former Žižka Barracks for one billion crowns. They are only preparing a partial renovation of the area. They will repair one building in the complex, where they will move the archive. The costs of this project are approximately 60 million crowns. The complete reconstruction of the area was halted, among other things, due to problematic ownership conditions. This was stated by the deputy mayor of České Budějovice, Juraj Thoma (HOPB), to ČTK.

The city had been preparing a comprehensive reconstruction of the barracks and wanted to relocate state offices there. "Further progress is not possible due to a disagreement with the customs office, which owns part of the area. The city intended to unify the area and offer the customs office other lands and properties. However, all offers were rejected by the customs office," Thoma stated.

Therefore, the city removed only a part from the planned project of approximately one billion. This concerns the historic barracks building on Žižka Street. "It is in absolutely catastrophic condition, cut off from all networks. Therefore, we will register the area as so-called brownfields, which are areas designated for reconversion and should be supported by the Ministry for Regional Development," said the deputy mayor.

The city could obtain a grant of up to 30 million crowns for this project. The city hall will also invest the same amount into the renovation, according to Thoma. "At least part of the city archive will then move there," the deputy mayor added.
