Brno – An unconventional place will have an eight-story residential building with 142 apartments called Diorit, which is starting to be built in the Brno district of Brno-Komín. It is rising in the location of a former quarry on a steep hill. As Jan Zeman, the investor's representative and project manager, told ČTK, the quarry space needed to be adapted before the actual construction began, which took two years.
"We were excited by the location as it is set in greenery, but the area is challenging for construction. We had to extract part of the quarry to fit the building and prevent it from being cramped. The walls of the quarry needed to be cleaned and secured as well. Preparing for construction was exceptionally costly and difficult," noted Zeman.
The eight-story residential building is being developed according to the design of the Brno architectural studio DRNH. In addition to the atypical shape of the construction site, the project also had to deal with access to light for the future apartments, as the area is surrounded by steep hills. To allow more light into the apartments, the first above-ground level is allocated for covered garages, while the residential building and park in the courtyard will be above them. Thus, the apartments are located over seven of the eight floors. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
