Brno – The leadership of Brno has commissioned a technical study for the use of the so-called Winter Spa building in the Zábrdovice district. They are considering establishing a rehabilitation center and a small museum dedicated to architect Bohuslav Fuchs, who designed the spa, in the neglected and currently closed building.
"We have commissioned a technical study and proposal for the use of the heritage-protected building known as the Winter Spa. This is a valuable structure built at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s according to the design of the notable Brno architect Bohuslav Fuchs. The facility has a rehabilitative-wellness character, which is why we would like to move the rehabilitation center from the Zahradníkova polyclinic here, which would also allow for a significant expansion of the current services," said Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík.
After reconstruction, the building could also house the children's rehabilitation center from the Bílý dům polyclinic, and a museum of architect Fuchs could be established, as he currently does not have any permanent exhibition in Brno, which he significantly influenced.
"Next year, the city leadership plans to create detailed studies and prepare the necessary documentation for the building permit. If everything goes according to plan, construction could start in 2024. The trial operation is planned to begin in the summer of 2026. As part of the preparation and construction itself, the city is counting on obtaining a grant," Hladík stated.
The building of the municipal spa in Zábrdovice was completed in 1932 according to Bohuslav Fuchs's design. In the two-story building of the winter spa, which is connected to the still functioning summer swimming area, there were steam and heated air baths, a hydrotherapy facility, a pool with warm and cold water, an inhalation department, showers for daily hygiene, and a sunbathing terrace. All these facilities operated year-round and were supplied with healing mud and water from the thermal spring of the Luhačovice spa. While the outdoor baths underwent reconstruction in the 1990s, the winter spa building is in poor condition and had to be closed.
