Brno - In the Brno-Žabovřesky district, the renovation of one of the largest inner courtyards, covering an area of 25,000 m², has been completed after 14 months of construction work. It is located between the buildings on Kounicova, Tábor, Pod Kaštany, and Šumavská streets. The costs of 46 million crowns were covered by the city budget. This was stated today in a press release by the spokesperson of the Žabovřesky city hall, Petra Kačírková.
The inner courtyard features renovated pathways, new park landscaping, areas for sports and leisure, a children's playground, and new urban furniture. "The project to renovate the inner courtyard, which is one of the largest in the Czech Republic, has been in preparation since 2014. The preparation included several public discussions with residents. A large part of their comments were incorporated during the preparation," said Kačírková.
Construction work began at the end of April last year and has now been completed, said the Deputy Mayor of Žabovřesky, Filip Leder (KDU-ČSL). During the renovation, workers added stormwater drainage, laid half a kilometer of piping, almost two kilometers of public lighting cables, brought in over 22 tons of soil, and restored the pavement over an area of 6,500 square meters. "The urban furniture has been enhanced with new benches, drinking fountains, and waste bins, as well as a shaded pergola for relaxation, a pétanque court, chess tables, and new elements were added to the children's playground," said Kačírková.
In two planting waves, 64 trees, 92 shrubs, and 101 plants will be planted. "Compared to the original project, several minor adjustments were still made, such as the construction of barrier-free ramps. Thanks to the new architectural design, new parking spaces will be created in the form of grassed and permeable areas, which will eliminate 'wild' parking on grassy areas and reduce dust and noise," said Leder. According to Kačírková, the renovated inner courtyard is one of the preserved examples of the so-called Brno sorel, a cultural and architectural style of the 1950s.
