Brno - On Thursday, December 18, the South Moravian Regional Authority will discuss the intention of CTP Invest to build a warehouse for the American company Amazon in the Černovická terasa industrial zone, according to information from the EIA Information Portal. The developer has not withdrawn the proposal, and it is therefore still undergoing an environmental impact assessment according to the law. However, this does not mean that Amazon has changed its opinion about Brno.
“Nothing has changed since our last statement. We are looking for a suitable location for our warehouse in Central Europe. Moreover, we have opened three warehouses in Poland, so we are not pressed for time,” said Karel Taschner, Amazon's spokesperson for the Czech Republic to ČTK. Amazon has stopped considering Brno due to the inconsistency of the political representation. “The obligation to hold a public hearing arises from the law,” said Tomáš Budař, regional director of CTP, to ČTK. The discussion follows the preparation of a counter-expert report on environmental impacts, which appeared on the EIA portal on November 18.
If Amazon is indeed no longer pursuing the Černovická terasa, the contract with the city for the lease of the land will expire at the end of the year. CTP only owns part of the land for the originally planned Amazon warehouse. Already at the end of October, Budař told ČTK that CTP is negotiating with clients who could operate on the large area. There would be more of them; Amazon was an exception among investors with its request for a large plot.
The Americans promised Brno at least 1,500 jobs and nearly a three-billion investment. However, due to bargaining and the unclear stance of the council, Amazon lost interest. Only after that did the council vote for the possibility of locating Amazon and also for the change in the zoning plan, which now allows warehouses to be placed in the industrial zone. Various civic associations and residents of nearby districts opposed the giant warehouse, fearing primarily a drastic increase in the number of passing trucks, which still lack the long-promised off-ramp from the highway directly into the industrial zone.
