Brno - In Brno-Kohoutovice, builders are completing the first aquapark in Brno. The indoor pool, featuring a ninety-meter slide and other attractions for 210 million crowns, is set to open in April. According to Josef Kavalec, the director of the construction company Stavoprogres Brno, the pool is unique not only for its location in the middle of a housing estate but also for its technical innovations.
Architectural solutions were designed by experts from the K4 studio, and according to Kavalec, they had to contend with limited space. They managed to fit the pool hall, technical facilities, entrance, service operations, and slide into a single entity. According to the director, the pool does not conform to any traditional technology; for example, builders used glued wooden trusses for the hall.
The director noted that many technical problems had to be addressed during construction, leading the authors to make over 180 changes to the project. Groundwork was reportedly problematic as the terrain consisted mainly of loose fill from the construction of the housing estate. "There are various technical finesse, such as a rooftop pool that measures 15 meters, so it's not a small pool," Kavalec added.
He stated that architects and designers selected modern materials for the construction, many of which are used in the country for the first time. This includes insulation of the building with so-called foam glass. "It has unique thermal properties; it doesn't condense," he added.
The aquacenter is funded by the Brno city council. Initially, they planned to build a school pool next to the school on Chalabalova Street for about 80 million crowns. However, the project gradually expanded. The mayor's deputy, Ladislav Macek (ČSSD), told reporters today that for the benefit of competitive swimmers, builders accepted all their objections and modified the 25-meter pool to meet competition parameters, making it suitable for water polo players and synchronized swimmers. For less skilled swimmers, there will be a relaxation pool with a lazy river, and a children's pool for kids.
The aquapark will be operated either by the city company Starez-Sport or a private entity. According to Macek, interested parties have already contacted the city council, promising to make a profit from the operation and pay rent to the council.
