Ústí nad Labem - The Ústí region expects to obtain a building permit for the construction of new facilities for the Ústí North Bohemian Scientific Library in February. The new buildings are to be constructed next to the existing building, which houses the study room and borrowing of scientific literature. The new facilities will not only provide space for readers but also mainly storage areas, which the library currently lacks. Naďa Kocábková, spokeswoman for the Ústí region that will finance the construction, informed ČTK that if everything goes well, construction of the new wing could begin this fall. The Ústí region will utilize the former vocational school building for the library expansion. When announcing the intent to renovate the building a year ago, the cost of reconstruction was estimated at 90 million crowns. It will likely be proposed in the budget draft that will be approved by the council, to allocate money for the completion of the project documentation. The main part of the funding may come from subsidies from the regional operational program, but the regional leadership has reportedly not yet decided whether to submit the application. The library needs this to enhance the quality of services for readers and to take good care of the books in its collections. The Ústí library partially serves as a university library, as students from the Ústí University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně borrow specialized literature here. Library director Aleš Broček previously stated that the construction of the new storage areas will mean that books will be kept right at the location where they are borrowed, allowing readers to receive them immediately. Currently, they have to wait for the library to locate the books in storage and transport them to the borrowing area. The Ústí library owns approximately 650,000 books.
