Třebíč - The parish managing the Třebíč basilica of Saint Procopius has completed the renovation of two rooms of the rectory adjacent to the basilica. The space with a café will primarily serve the parishioners and, in the future, possibly tourists visiting the basilica. The half-million repair was funded by donations to the parish. In the fall, they plan to repair the retaining wall behind the rectory and continue with the roof repairs of the basilica in the spring of next year. The Romanesque-Gothic structure will also undergo restoration of stone elements and façade renewal on the towers and west façade in the coming years, for more than seven million crowns. This was reported to ČTK by pastor Jakub Holík.
The retaining wall in the parish garden is, according to Holík, in an emergency condition. The city is also requesting a grant for its repair at a cost of about 500,000 crowns. The Třebíč councillors will decide on it on Thursday. They will also approve co-funding for the renovation of the basilica's roof. The total cost of its renewal is about eight million crowns. The work is divided into several phases. In the first half of this year, the second phase was already initiated and will continue next year. "We have repaired the roof of the basilica above the main nave, and this year part of the monks' choir and the presbytery have been completed. The monks' choir will be finished next year," said Holík.
The renovated spaces in the rectory, which are still awaiting inspection, were originally used for storing coal and wood. "Now they will primarily serve the parishioners, and in the coming years they could be opened to tourists during the summer season, who are waiting in the courtyard for a tour of the basilica," said Holík.
The basilica of Saint Procopius, dating from the mid-13th century, was inscribed in 2003 along with the Jewish quarter of Třebíč on the UNESCO list. It is visited by about 35,000 people annually.
